Give Presence For Christmas 

Christmas is a time for giving. A lot of the time we give things, and sometimes the things can get in the way of what’s really important. Christmas is for family, for lazy hours on the beach and morning walks. Highlight what’s important by trying some of the ideas below: 

  1. Put away your phone and turn off the TV, see what conversation comes up. 

  2. Go for a walk with one of your children – let them lead the pace, direction and conversation. 

  3. Make a cup of tea for your nana/mum/aunty, and drink it with her. Ask her how she is and listen intently. 

  4. Write a letter to each family member, put it under the Christmas tree, tell them how special they are to you. 

  5. When your children speak to you, crouch down to their eye level and really listen, give them space to express themselves without trying to ‘parent’ them too much. 

  6. Remember to laugh with your children often – nothing will make them happier. 

  7. Make sure there’s a day or two set aside over the holidays with nothing planned. Just be together and let the day unfold. 

  8. Treat those around you, and yourself with tenderness and an open heart. 

  9. Play with your children on their terms, ask them what game they would like to play and embrace it as if it was your own. These moments will validate their own interests and the joy it brings will stick with them forever. 

  10. And lastly – be in the moment, whatever it is. Appreciate each second for the miracle that it is.
