Immigrating to New Zealand from Scotland with her sister in 2001, Gillian refers to herself as a ‘kilted Kiwi’. Since the move her whole family has followed and all live in Auckland. She’s worked at New Shoots Sunnynook since 2005, working primarily with our preschool children.

“I have always had a passion for teaching children in the year before they go to school. I would like to think that every child that leaves my class is prepared not only academically but, more importantly, emotionally for the next stage in their school journey. After starting a forest kindy programme at Sunnynook in 2017, I have become interested in looking at similar programmes around the world and the benefits these programmes provide children.

Outside of work, I am a keen amateur dancer (ballet, tap and jazz) and perform at the end of every year in my dance school’s recital. I also enjoy drawing and creating craft work, especially making peg dolls. These two interests spill into my teaching practice quite regularly and the Punga children can quite often be found dancing to our favourite songs.”
