New Shoots Rotokauri has officially opened its doors, and tamariki and whānau are already beginning to bring the new early learning centre in Hamilton to life. 

Designed to reflect the tranquil rural setting of the growing Rotokauri community, the centre draws further inspiration from the nearby Hamilton Zoo. Through calm interior spaces and nature-based outdoor play areas, it exhibits a strong connection to the unique local environment. 

With the centre now up and running, it feels like the perfect time to share a little of the story behind this very special place. 

Shaped by Rotokauri, for Rotokauri

Every New Shoots centre is designed with a strong sense of place. No two centres are the same, and Rotokauri was never going to be an exception. 

Before the interior spaces took shape, our design team spent time looking closely at the centre’s local context. The natural outlook and history of the area, including the nearby zoo and surrounding farmland, all became part of the planning. The team wanted New Shoots Rotokauri to have its own story, reflected through the materials, textures, colours and small details that tamariki would experience each day. 

For Chloe Forsman, who led the interior fit-out, the setting was immediately inspiring. 

“Being located so close to Hamilton Zoo meant we could actually hear the gibbons from the playground,” she shares.“We knew immediately that we didn’t just want to acknowledge this extraordinary setting, we wanted to celebrate it wholeheartedly.” 

This celebration of the local area can be felt throughout the centre. Woven textures offer a quiet nod to the area’s history of flax weaving, while the layered material palette brings warmth, depth and a natural richness to the rooms. 

Working closely with Copeland Associates Architects, our design team embedded thoughtful architectural features throughout the space—from the outside in. Planter boxes, deck seating, posts and warm natural finishes all contribute to the atmosphere, helping the centre feel calm, connected, and grounded. 

Calm, Connected Spaces for Early Learning

At New Shoots, environment is often thought of as the third teacher. This means the spaces themselves have an important role to play in helping tamariki feel secure, capable and curious. 

Inside the Rotokauri centre, each room has been designed to support the way tamariki learn, move, rest, and build relationships.  

Indoor spaces feel open and light, while still providing opportunities for moments of refuge and discovery. Posts and planters help gently define the activity spaces, reducing the scale for children and creating a sense of structure without closing the rooms in. 

There are also smaller details which families may not notice straight away, but that have been carefully considered. The fan features in each room, for example, create beautiful child-scaled, light-filtered spaces. For tamariki, these can become little places of retreat, wonder, and quiet play. 

Practicality has also been central to the design. In an early childhood centre, spaces need to work hard every day. Storage, flow and accessibility all matter. When kaiako can easily access the resources they need, the day runs more smoothly, the rooms feel calmer, and tamariki benefit from a more settled and responsive environment. 

The finished spaces at the new centre are both beautiful and functional, designed to support tamariki, kaiako and whānau in the rhythms of everyday centre life. 

Nature Play at the Heart of the Rotokauri Playground

New Shoots Rotokauri’s outdoor spaces were created to give tamariki a sense of movement, challenge and discovery. Rather than relying only on traditional playground equipment, the landscape itself becomes part of the play. 

Boulders, logs, planting, sand, water and changes in level all invite exploration. These elements support tamariki to climb, balance, investigate, imagine and problem-solve in ways that feel natural and meaningful. 

With nature play at its heart, the playground has also been carefully designed for different ages and stages. 

For pēpi and toddlers, open space supports early movement, crawling, toddling, walking, falling safely, changing direction and exploring at their own pace. For preschoolers, the outdoor environment offers more complex physical challenges, including higher platforms, slides, bike tracks and harder-to-reach destinations. 

Water and sand play have also been designed with different age groups in mind. Younger children have simple, accessible sensory experiences, while toddlers and preschoolers can explore more detailed water channels, splash areas and sand play opportunities. 

Challenge, Safety and Everyday Use 

A rich outdoor environment needs to offer enriching challenges, while still being safe, practical and easy to supervise. 

At New Shoots Rotokauri, this balance was carefully considered throughout the playground design and build. Managed risk is an important part of nature play. When it is thoughtfully planned, it gives tamariki opportunities to build confidence, test their abilities, and learn how to make decisions about their own movement and play. 

There was also plenty of practical problem-solving behind the scenes. Drainage, storage, ground levels and all-weather usability were all considered to make sure the playground would work well throughout the year. 

The infant area was adapted during the process to create a more varied and usable play space. Ground heights were adjusted, artificial turf was added by EcoLawn, and the sandpit placement was changed to better support pēpi and younger tamariki. 

Planting by Touch of the Tropics and playful zoo-inspired details help connect the outdoor environment back to the wider Rotokauri setting, bringing softness, vibrancy, and a sense of local character into the playground. 

Brought to life by many hands

A centre like Rotokauri does not come together through one person or one decision. It takes many people, each bringing their own care, expertise, and attention to detail. 

From the architectural design and interior fit-out, through to the playground, planting, construction and finishing touches, Rotokauri has been shaped by a team who understand what these spaces mean for tamariki, whānau and kaiako. 

Looking back on the process, Chloe reflects that there is always a special moment near the end of a project when everything begins to shift. 

“It truly takes a village of people who care deeply about New Shoots to bring these spaces to life,” she says. “There is always a magical moment, usually over just a few days of furniture installation, when the space transforms before your eyes. Witnessing that shift from construction site to cherished environment never gets old.” 

CBC Construction led the centre build, bringing the architectural plans to life and helping create the beautiful, purpose-built environment that our Rotokauri tamariki and whānau are now settling into. 

Outside, the playground was shaped with input from New Shoots Facilities Lead, Tim Neville and brought to life by Construction2, working alongside Wearthy, who designed the nature-based outdoor spaces. Together, the playground team created an environment filled with movement, challenge, discovery, and connection to the wider Rotokauri setting. 

For Tim, seeing the outdoor space take shape has been particularly special: 

“Watching it transform from a patch of dirt to a place that is going to bring a whole lot of children joy and learning for years to come is always rewarding.” 

A Place for Children and Families to Grow Together

New Shoots Rotokauri is now open, and we’re delighted to see our enrolled families settling into the centre.
